Taste of Burlington - Prix Fixe Dining Event

If you love good food, great atmoshere and a sweet deal then the Taste of Burlington is the dining event for you.  This summer twenty-four of Burlington's finest restaurants have put together 3 course menus that are sure to tempt and delight your tastebuds.  With a wide variety of cuisines and a continuing focus on local food this program is the perfect opportunity to get out and try something new or re-visit an old favourite. In commemoration of the War of 1812 this year lunches are being offered at $18.12 and dinners remain at $30, $35 and $40.  It doesn't get much better than this!

Don't take our word for it, we asked Allie Hughes, a food and drink writer from Niagara to head out and try some of the taste menus and so far it appears that they do not disappoint.

We couldn't provide the entire reviews for each restaurant but we will give you a "taste" (I know, so witty) of each and a link to the entire review.

Red Canoe Bistro was first up for my Taste of Burlington adventure, and lets start by saying that things kicked off on a high note. I was greeted by Josie, who is nothing short of all things wonderful. Her hospitality was appreciated and she must be mentioned for being exceptional at her job. We were given a quick intro to the culinary school of thought at Red Canoe Bistro and were delighted to discover the passion and commitment to all things local. Dinner menus change every 2-3 weeks and tasting menus change every few days. An ever evolving menu is indicative of someone who believes in the farmers market: my kind of people. We settled into the corner table and were surrounded by preserves of local fruit and veg, elegantly displayed throughout the dining area. Walls were adorned in creative and travel inspired pieces and tables were set with minimal and modern flare. Easy to feel comfortable and right at home.  Dining off of the prix fixe Taste of Burlington menu, my guest and I chose to eat the exact opposite of each other, maximizing the tasting potential. In the meantime we indulged in a glass of wine off of the, Ontario industry supportive, wine list that is expansive at more than several pages long. On this evening, we selected the 2010 Tawse Echoes Chardonnay, with some chicken and trout in store, it only seemed appropriate!
Course 1:
Cucumber, Cantaloupe and Aged Pine River Cheddar Salad with Mint Basil Emulsion
This dish is embodiment of a sweet and savoury balance. With the bright cantaloupe flavours offering a fresh fruitful spin and the aged cheddar performing the balancing act, it really did work beautifully together. The cucumber was julienned and marinated in a vinaigrette with pulled out the delicious fresh basil from the emulsion. All in all, a hit. With two tasters diving in, this was nothing short of a delicious start to the meal.

As we arrived to The Martini House the rain began to all and as I was racing up to the Martini House I soaked up the exterior which appears to be the spot to enjoy libations on a patio. A big spacious deck with seats aplenty… this is a good place to be. Upon opening the restaurant door, my assumptions were confirmed as good vibes poured out of the place with the ambient sounds of cheerful banter and laughter making us feel welcome and ready to join in!  My guest and I sat in the dining room, which is a cozy spot, elegantly dressed with dark walls, beautiful adornments and crisp white linens. There is something about white linen that screams “get ready, you’re in for something good!” And so, we readied ourselves, indulging in some VQA goodness right out of the gate and our ver lovely server Jennifer explained the menu carefully ensuring we were ready to make our decisions. I availed of the Megalomaniac Homegrown Riesling, crisp and off-dry with mouthwatering acidity. My guest dove into a glass of Peninsula Ridge Cabernet, a blend of deep berry flavours and the perfect amount of spice. As I discuss our dinners, the wine choices will make perfect sense!  The Taste of Burlington menu at The Martini House boasts selection, and for a prix fixe menu they have gone over and above, offering a plate for each style of taster. So, while I can’t give you the details on each and every, I will discuss the decadent gourmet that we feasted on. And we did indeed feast!
Course 1:Asian Bowl – Supreme of orange, edamame, sesame seeds and crisp lettuce tossed with house vinaigrette
Crisp, fresh, light, flavourful: all words to describe this delicious start to my Martini House experience. The lettuce was mixed greens and sat with mandarin oranges and edamame. Bright green veg flavours were fresh and reminiscent of a summer garden! The vinaigrette packed some citrus punch and was the right amount of sour to work beautifully with the sweet orange. All of this was topped with white and black sesame seeds: not only a winner on the palate, but also on the plate!

Atmosphere aplenty, Ivy Bar and Kitchen is a feast for the eyes and for the palate. Before I divulge the details on my meal, it must be mentioned how incredible the décor is at this location. Walls are adorned with modern birch trees, sleek black tile, smooth charcoal and rich wood. They have also installed two living walls that pour lush flora… just beautiful. The interior is spectacular, but Ivy Bar and Kitchen has a patio that dreams are made of. Outdoor bars, comfortable and sleek outdoor furniture and so much space. Tip from one who has, like this restaurant on Facebook. They put out great offers and have lots of weekly features that make a trip very easy to justify!  Amanda, who gave us the goods on this new Burlington hot spot, which has been open for about four months, was our server. Their Taste of Burlington menu is full of delicious options in a range of culinary styles… something for everyone! Our dining experience started with a glass of California Fume Blanc, and I will note, gently, that the VQA wine supporter in me shed a tear when I noted the presence of impressive international bottles and not much love for the local players. I will also note that I hail from wine country and love a local bottle! My guest ordered a pint of Mill St, and it should be fairly noted that this is a Canadian beer hailing from Toronto, well done Ivy!
Course 1:
Mushroom and Leek Pot Stickers – roasted Portobello, garlic miso, toasted almond crunch, citrus ponzu
Ordered by my guest and generously shared, these are a delicious must-try on the menu. The soft leek flavour inside the pot sticker is unreal and caramelized to perfection inside the ideal crispy exterior. Made even better by the generous slices of roasted Portobello, it is an incredible blend of savoury and earthy topped off by the sweet and salty soy. Each flavour compliments the other and was devoured with smiles all around.

Walking up to Walkers Fish Market, you quickly realize that this is a destination on theme, and in a very elegant way. Just in the door we were feasting our eyes on an oyster bar, fawning over a wall of wine and soaking up the nautical accents in every direction.
There is an anecdote about our experience that I have to share with you, it put a big smile on my face. The best-dressed couple in the joint were a pair of 70 somethings, she in her floor length coral dress and he in his khakis and navy blue dinner jacket. They were seated and greeted by every member of the Walkers team that walked by, evidently regulars one server stopped and looked at the gentleman delivering a salute which he promptly returned. It was awesome and not rehearsed, but definitely a tradition of sorts. That is the kind of place Walkers Fish Market is, the staff care and a busy dining room was indicative of this. I am, evidently, not the first to notice this.  Our meal began with a glass of wine from their expansive wine list; I indulged in a Cabernet Sauvignon, and my guest a beer from Burlington. My guest is a lover of micro-brews and so this was a gold star highlight of his evening… well his evening so far. As I continue you will learn that with each course of night got better!
Course 1:Cup of Lobster Shrimp Bisque
A cup of creamy goodness, the fresh seafood flavours were undeniable. With bites of lobster and shrimp settling at the bottom of the bowl, we were literally digging in to indulge in each bite. The creamy flavours were balanced with the savoury seafood and a slight sweetness that made this soup a must repeat. One of the most delicious bisques I’ve tried.

A Sunday evening in Burlington found the downtown core alive with bustling bodies indulging on patios. La Costa Nuova was no exception with a lively chat happening at a happy table as we approached. Upon entering the restaurant it became clear that this is a mainstay at La Costa Nuova as each table seemed just as happy and pleased to be dining there. I felt spoiled as the table with the view was reserved for our dining experience and grateful when we sat and began our evening of indulgence.  Our server for the evening was Jenn, and she was great. Overflowing with personality and knowledgeable about her menu, we were guided through the Taste of Burlington culinary selections with ease. Following our plated orders I was treated to a tasting opportunity with the General Manager of the Guest Experience and certified Sommelier, Sharon. I indulged in two decadent sips before making my selection. The wine for course one was the Lilly Pilly Sauvignon Blanc. Mouthwatering tropical flavours with bright and refreshing acidity. Just perfect. My guest indulged in a French beer, Kronenbourg, and we were off!
Course 1Creamy Roasted Cauliflower Risotto with aged balsamic and young seedlingsIf heaven were plated, this is exactly what it would look like. The risotto was the perfect amount of creamy and had a decadent cauliflower flavour. Something about warm cauliflower makes it the ultimate comfort food and this example did not fall short. The aged balsamic poured on the edge gave a bright punch of flavour to balance the cream and the parmesan shards that lay atop the dish packed the strong savoury nuances that rounded out the dish. Server Jenn smiled eyes wide when she asked how it was and following our hearty nods not wanting to break from the experience she gushed about hoping it would be on the menu again and again. It appears the staff are also fans… a great sign when you really hope to return to a dish! (and we do!)

John Brant Day celebrates our history and the War of 1812

Summer festivals are always chock full of great entertainment, children’s activities, vendors and local artisans, making them a fun experience for the whole family. And if anyone knows how to make a great summer festival, it’s the Museums of Burlington. Our annual summer events draw huge local area crowds, and offer historical education mixed with family fun. Having already put on a smashing Canada Day Strawberry Social, we are excited to host JohnBrant Day.

Every year on the Civic Holiday, the Museums celebrate the history of one of the city’s founders, Joseph Brant Thayendenaga. Since this year is the 200thAnniversary of the War of 1812, they’ve taken a different approach, focusing on the achievements of John Brant. John Brant was Joseph Brant’s son and an important player in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Queenston Heights, making him the perfect focal point for this year’s festival. In fact you can expect to be able to witness a re-enactment of this battle at John Brant Day complete with War of 1812 historic soldier re-enactors. If you haven't seen something like this before you will be amazed how realistic these guys can make a battle look, smoking guns and all.

The event will have plenty of draw for those with a passion for history. In addition to the battle re-enactments, there will be the chance to experience the life of a soldier with military drills and exercises, a chance to go through a historical militia encampment, Zig Misiak’s Wampum Workshop & 1812 storytelling, the portrayal of Laura Secord and the reenactment of Sir Isaac Brock & John Brant’s meeting
(as part of Brock’s Walk that retraces Brock’s historic journey from Fort York to Port Dover in helping save our country). You can check out more about that here

Let’s just say the Museum’s of Burlington know how to satisfy your thirst for knowledge. Thanks to significant funding from Canadian Heritage, the Museums have been able to expand their historic militia and War of 1812 encampment to the largest ever; making this War of 1812 spectacle something you won’t want to miss.

It doesn’t stop there, though - the Museums' team have worked to create a fun filled day with children’s games, inflatables, live parades and entertainment such as
The Teen Tour Band, the musical talents of Hoys Totsy, the Sophisticated Swing Big band Orchestra and Blue Stone Cloud Hoop dancing. If that doesn’t seem like enough, there will also be crafts, artisans and vendors, a silent auction, roaming entertainers, face painting, boat rides, balloon twisting, drum circles and so much more. How we’ve managed to fit so much fun into a single day is beyond me, but you should definitely head down and see for yourself. The best part? Admission is FREE!

Remember, John Brant Day is on the Civic Holiday Monday, August 6th, 2012 from 10:00am to 5:00pm at LaSalle Park. Hope to see you there! Oh, and you can take a shuttle from Aldershot High school if the parking lot is full at LaSalle Park – the shuttle will run regularly all day from 10:00 am until 5:30pm!

More Family Fun Events in Burlington, ON

Well we are already half-way through the summer which means you are probably looking for some new activities to keep everyone entertained.  The good news is that there are lots of great options for family fun including enjoying feature films in the great outdoors.  Both the City of Burlington and Kelso Conservation Area are running a series of outdoor movie nights.  Just pack your chair or blanket, some snacks and drinks and get ready for a fun-filled evening.

City of Burlington – Movies under the Stars
from BurlEventGurl
You know, I have to say that I absolutely love summer...the hot sunny days, the warm balmy nights; it’s great! But for those of you that may be trying to entertain kids on a budget, sometimes it can be challenging to fend off another course of the “I’m BOOOORRRREEED” blues!

Well, get ready for some relief! Every Thursday night from July 12 through August 16, Tim Hortons presents Movies Under the Stars. This outdoor movie series is open to everyone and the best part? It’s free!

Thursday, July 12 – Puss in Boots at Nelson Park
If you love Antonio Banderas’ interpretation of Puss in Boots in the 4 Shrek movies, you will love his starring role in Puss in Boots. In the same style of Shrek, traditional fairy tales and characters are given a unique spin for an adventure the whole family will love. And to prove you’re never too old for cartoons or fairy tales, this is one of my husband’s favourite movies.

Thursday, July 19 – Big Miracle at Kiwanis Park
While I haven’t seen this movie myself, I am looking forward to taking my family to see Big Miracle. Based on a true story from 1988, a reporter (played by John Krasinski, who you may know from The Office) and an environmental volunteer (played by Drew Barrymore), band together to free 3 whales trapped beneath the ice in the Arctic Circle. This has been touted to be a feel good movie, that’s great family entertainment, especially for older kids.

Thursday, July 26 – The Muppets at Optimist Park
The Muppets are back on the big screen after a 12 year hiatus. A star studded cast (Jason Segel, who you may know from How I Met Your Mother), Amy Adams, and Jack Black, try to help Kermit the Frog reunite with his Muppets friends. They must raise $10 million to save their old theatre from Tex Richman (played by Chris Cooper) who wants to demolish the theatre to drill for oil. A great family movie, this is one to see if you loved the Muppets as a child or are a newer Muppet fan. True to the tradition of the Muppets, be sure to watch for tons of cameos with stars playing themselves!

Thursday, August 2 – Toy Story 3 at Emerson Park
In my opinion, Toy Story 3 is definitely an example of 3 times’s a charm. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the Toy Story movies (and can probably quote more lines from each one than a grown up should be able to...) but Toy Story 3 is one of my favourites. In fact, it’s a favourite with everyone at our house! All your favourite characters, Woody, Buzz, and the gang are back for another adventure. This time, Andy is all grown up and getting ready to go to college. His toys are supposed to be stored in the attic, but instead end up at Sunnyside Daycare for an adventure they’ll never forget. This is a great movie for all ages with adventure, excitement and the voice talents of Michael Keaton and Timothy Dalton joining Tim Allen and another favourite of mine, Tom Hanks.

Thursday, August 9 – The Lorax at Lowville Park
I plan to make the drive up to Lowville Park to catch The Lorax, again. I took my kids to see this over the winter holidays when it was in theatres and absolutely loved it. True to Dr. Seuss, it has fun, original characters, and a lesson to be learned. Even though the movie is based on the 1972 book, the environmental message still rings true today. Great voice talent (Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Danny Devito, and Betty White to name only a few) make this a fun movie for all!

Thursday, August 16 – We Bought A Zoo at Burloak Park
We Bought A Zoo is the holiday smash brought to life by director/writer/producer Cameron Crowe (Jerry McGuire). Inspired by a true story, Matt Damon plays a recently widowed dad, Benjamin Mee, who buys a rundown zoo in an attempt to make a fresh start with his family. Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church round out the cast as the head zoo keeper and Mee’s brother respectively. This is a great story that both adults and older children will love. Some say that the animal ‘actors’ outshine the human talent in this comedy-drama file. Because this movie deals with grief, and how it affects Mee’s children as well (aged 7 & 14), it is best suited to children aged 7 and up.
Be sure to grab a chair and a blanket and check the web site or call the Burlington Events hotline at 905-335-7766 for information before heading out to any of these movies. They are weather dependant so will be cancelled in case of rain. A rain date is planned for August 23rd at Mohawk Park to show the movie that got rained out.

See you at the Movies Under the Stars!

Kelso Conservation – Family Outdoor Movie Nights*
Family Outdoor Movie Nights at Kelso Conservation Area are back starting Friday August 10th.  Join friends and family under the stars to watch an all-time favourite. Bring lawn chairs and blankets, relax and enjoy. Movies start at dusk.   With all there is to do at Kelso consider spending the day enjoying the biking, trails, beach (you can rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboats), and picnic areas
*regular park admission rates apply

Friday August 10 - The Muppets
When an evil oil man discovers black gold beneath Muppet Theater, Kermit recruits a Muppet super-fan and his two best friends to help gather up the gang for a telethon that will save the venue from being razed and replaced with a giant oil pump.

Friday August 17 -  Rio
Join these rare birds as they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life's many wonders. Rio brings together a menagerie of vivid characters, a heart-warming story, colorful backdrops, energizing Latin and contemporary music, and family-friendly song and dance.

Friday August 24 – Big Miracle
In small town Alaska, a news reporter recruits his ex-girlfriend - a Greenpeace volunteer - on a campaign to save a family of gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle.

Friday August 31 – The Lorax
A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

Some other great evening events to consider are:
City of Burlington Concerts in the Park – Wednesday & Sunday at Central Park Bandshell plus selected Sundays at Spencer Smith Park – FREE

Bronte Creek Provincial Park Ghost Walks – Sunday nights in August.  Regular Park admission rates apply.

Royal Botanical Gardens Tranquil Tuesdays (to July 31) and Red Hot Jazz and Cool Blues Wednesdays (to Sept. 5).  Regular admission fees apply.

Burlington Performing Arts Centre - Experiences that Inspire

2012-13 Professional Entertainment Series – Experiences that Inspire
Did you know that in it’s inaugural season the new Burlington Performing Arts Centre welcomed over 30,000 people?  After having such a successful first season you may think that would be hard to top but the recently launched 2012-13 season does not disappoint!

Executive Director Brenda Heatherington was the M.C. of the launch event on May 23 and her excitement and passion for the centre, the program and the arts shone through as she introduced the performance schedule.  While the entertainers were brought to life on screen she couldn’t help but tap her toes and move a little to the music. That enthusiasm was hard to miss and was contagious.  While I watched, I was inspired by the talent and variety of acts that we will be hosting right here in our theatre.  I was singing along (quietly so as not to annoy people) to classics like Colin James, Cowboy Junkies, and David Clayton-Thomas.  It sure brought back memories and reveals my age!

Here is a rundown of the season but a word to the wise, check the site often as new performances are added regularly throughout the year.  In fact what I have found really helpful is to sign up to get their Enewsletter by email so you don’t miss out on seeing some of your new or old favorites.

The Main Stage will once again be filled with some of the most electrifying and diverse performances found anywhere.  You can listen to legends like David Clayton-Thomas or Grammy Award winning blues sensation Taj Mahal, laugh with the star of Corner Gas – Brent Butt, dance in the aisles to Mediterranean sounds of Pavlo (who played at the launch and were fabulous) and bring the whole family to sing along to the classic movie, The Sound of Music.
