AMAZING is the optimal word for Sunday, September 26, 2010. Not only was the weather AMAZING but it was the first annual AMAZING BED RACE in downtown Burlington. The event was a fundraising initiative for Joseph Brant Hospital in partnership with the Rotary of Burlington North. Thirty-two teams gathered in front of city hall representing local businesses, restaurants and agencies. The route was lined with cheering spectators, COGECO was broadcasting live and the music was blaring, the energy was AMAZING.
The event started with the introductions of each team as they proudly walked their bed down the route to the applause of family and friends. The beds were AMAZING, six feet long, three feet wide, 4 wheels and a platform for the patient (oops rider!). They were colourfully decorated with signage, balloons, instruments, etc. Some were built on bicycle frames while others used hot rod wheels.
The horn blast launched the first of three time trials as beds raced down the route two at a time. Four runners and one rider used human energy to propel and guide the beds down the route in the fastest time. There were a few casualties and near misses, but in the end it was all about ergonomics and strength as the Halton Regional Police Services AMAZING bed took first place.
A great time was had by all, dollars raised will go towards the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Ambulatory Surgical Unit and capital campaign.
